Germany Opportunity Card (Opens June 1st, 2024)

The Germany Opportunity Card (Chancenkarte) is a new program to attract skilled workers outside the European Union (EU). This program will allow them to come to Germany for 12 months to look for a Job. Hence, applicants do not need a Job offer or permanent employment contract in advance. You can apply for the Opportunity Card through your country’s German Diplomatic Mission/embassy from 1st June 2024. German Opportunity Card program will be available for applications starting on June 1, 2024.

The Opportunity Card is similar to the Germany Job Seeker Visa but has more flexibility and longer validity. Applicants from all non-EU countries can apply for the Opportunity card. With this card, you can also do part-time work for up to 20 hours a week. To ensure that your application goes smoothly there are some requirements. Understand the Points Based System and the Requirements to Qualify for the Germany Opportunity Card

According to the points system, you must obtain at least six points to receive the Opportunity Card.

The Points system is based on:

  1. Education
  2. Language Skills
  3. Living Expenses
  4. Experience
  5. Previous Visit
  6. Spouse Qualification

1) Vocational Training or University Degree

  • Vocational Education: You must have completed Vocational Training with a duration of at least two years and be state-recognized in your country.
  • University Degree: If you have obtained a University degree, you can also apply.

2) Language Skills

You must have either English or German Language skills. At least level A1 (basic, beginner level) in German or level B2 (Advanced) in English. You can learn German or English from many online learning Apps, and websites such as Babbel, IELTS, TOEFL, Preply, Goethe

Applicants from non-EU countries can enter Germany more easily and look for work there more quickly

3) Proof of Funds for Living Expenses

Since you have to live in Germany and that requires Food, accommodation, and other expenses you have savings.

  • Option 1: Proof of Savings

  • Option 2: Employment Offer from Germany

Another option is to secure employment in Germany. The Opportunity card allows you to do part-time work for up to 20 hours a week. Before applying for the Opportunity card you have to show Proof of a job in the form of an employment contract with a German company.

In Germany, the minimum wage is 12.00 euros gross per hour (as of May 2023). With a part-time job (20 hours per week), you can earn above 1000 euros per month. Once you have received a Full-time Job offer your your net income will rise

4) Work Experience Experience

Professional experience is necessary in your related field. Minimum of 2 years of experience is required. Proof of Professional experience can usually be provided by a letter from your current or former employer.

5) Previous Visit to Germany

If you have previously stayed in Germany for more than six months in the last five years can increase your chances of getting an Opportunity Card. Note that it does not include tourist stays.

You can prove your stay in Germany through Employment or rental contracts.

6) Spouse Qualification

If your spouse is also interested in the opportunity card, you both can receive additional points together. You can prove your relationship through a Marriage Certificate. Your spouse should also meet the basic requirements of the Opportunity Card.
