Malta Work Visa Process 2024 (Types of Permits, Requirements)

Malta is a very small but beautiful EU Country that has attracted many international foreign applicants in the last few years. Still in the eyes of many people. Moving to Malta is relatively straightforward. This post will tell you about the Malta Work Visa Process and the requirements to obtain a Malta work permit. The process is very cheap. Malta is an EU country so the benefit is you can also travel to other EU countries without a visa.

How Long You can Stay on a Malta Work Visa?

If your stay is longer than 90 days you need to apply for the National Long Stay Visa which is also called D Visa. In addition to a long-stay visa, foreign employees will need a work permit too.

Duration of a Malta Work Permit

The work visa duration for Malta is one year.

Types of Malta Work Permits

To get a Malta work visa you need to select the type of work permit you want to apply for. Malta offers three types of Work permits and Residency programs.

The types of Malta work permits are as follows:

• Single Permit.
• Key employment initiative.
• EU Blue Card.

1) Malta Single Work Permit

This permit is issued to individuals to live and work in Malta for the long term. An individual must have a Valid Job offer from the Malta employer. Your employer can also apply on your behalf. A single permit takes two to three months to process.

2) Malta Key Employee Initiative

This Visa is for highly skilled workers and can be issued in five days only. You have to make sure to meet the following eligibility requirements for the Key Employee Initiative:

• Relevant Skills and work experience for the qualified job.
• An annual salary of at least €30,000.
• Document copies of your previous work experiences over the last three years.

3) EU Blue Card

The EU Blue card is for highly skilled positions and workers in the educated field issued to highly qualified educational applicants. The Maltese Govt will give you a Blue card in 3 years. After getting a Blue card you are allowed to move to any EU Country to live and work.

How to Apply for the Malta Work Visa?

The work process for a Malta work visa is relatively straightforward.

1) Collect the Documents

Collecting the required documents depends on the type of visa/your nationality and the work permit.

2) Enter Malta and apply for the Work Permit

You have to apply for a Malta work permit from inside Malta after arrival. But before this:

• Apply for a Malta national visa (Long stay D Visa) at the Maltese embassy in your country.
• Receive the Interim Receipt card. The Malta embassy issues the Interim Receipt Card, which will allow you to enter Malta to apply for a single permit.
• Apply for a Work Permit. After you enter Malta, you must submit the application form and all the documents required to the Identity Malta Agency in person.

3) Apply for Employment License

Your employer must apply for an employment license (also known as a work permit) on your behalf.

4) Receive the Work Permit

If your Malta work permit is approved, Identity Malta will send you the residence card. Once you receive the card you can begin work legally.

Types of Malta Residency Program

On Malta residency programs you can also bring your family.

• Digital Nomad Visa
• Startup Residence Programme
• Permanent Residency Programme

These residency programs are new programs by the Maltese Govt to attract foreign workers. These are relatively easier than the Malta work permits. You can apply online and send your documents by mail.

Malta Nomad Residence Permit (Popular One)

This permit is for one who can work remotely from home. He/she can be self-employed, an employee, or a Freelancer.

The Permit is open to individuals who can work remotely and independent of location, using telecommunications technologies.

For this Visa, you don’t need a Job offer from Malta. You will get a Nomad residency permit for 3 years, later on, you can renew it and after 5 years you can convert it into a Passport.

Malta Permanent Residency Program

Malta also offers a permanent residency program by investment. The processing time will take 4 to 6 months.

Malta Startup Residence Programme

The Malta Startup Residence Programme grants a 3-year residence permit, extendable for an additional 5 years, during which beneficiaries can reside in Malta while launching their startup venture.
